Every morning, we wake up to a handful of emails touting discount savings on all kinds of products and services. To be honest, though, some of the offerings are pretty lame – is it really a good idea to use a coupon for a face lift? – and hardly worth the trouble of deleting each day. So, in order to help you sort through the deal-of-the-day clutter, we’ve put together a list of our Top 6 Daily Deal Sites for Los Angeles. Using these coupons can be a great way to find new restaurants, visit new specialty food stores, and explore the city!

The Granddaddy of Them All: Groupon

A youthful elder statesman of the genre, Groupon launched in November of 2008 and became the fastest company to reach $1 billion valuation (thank you, Wikipedia). If you don’t already receive these deals every morning, then you must not have an email address. Groupon defines the format so much that its name has replaced “deal-of-the-day website” much like Kleenex means tissue and Forever Lazy means you’ve just given up.

The Overlooked Little Sister: LivingSocial

They claim to have about the same membership numbers as Groupon, but suffer from a far less-catchy name. LivingSocial does, however, offer nifty vacation deals in addition to their discount shopping opportunities.

The Bourgie Aunt: Gilt City L.A.

This is a coupon service that even the Beverly Hills crowd can get behind. Gilt City L.A. easily has the snazziest pictures of any daily-deal emails we receive. And with all the clutter in our inbox, a well designed layout goes a long way.

The Trust Fund Kid: Amazon Local

Like the recently launched Google Offers, Amazon Local represents a major online player getting into the deal-of-the-day game. There are many upstarts in the business, but Amazon has hit the ground running with some solid deals. Disappointingly, though, none of the coupons come with free shipping.

The Broke College Student: CampusOn

Oh, college: surviving off $5 pizza deals, 99¢ taco Tuesdays, and ramen cups that somehow cost less than a nickel. What demographic could use a few helpful discounts more than USC and UCLA students? (The site offers promotions to students at universities all over the country, but only those two schools locally. Sorry, Loyola Marymount.)

The Hip Teenager: Popsugar City

Using plenty of pink text, this blog features pop culture news alongside trendy tips about events, shops, and food in Los Angeles. Plus, their emails now contain daily deals, so you won’t break the bank while hanging with the in crowd.

Papa Cristo’s C&K Importing Company calls itself the Athens of Los Angeles, and for good reason. This taverna and specialty store has been the largest purveyor of Greek products in L.A. for over 60 years. Dozens of Greek wines line the west end of the store. Across the way, the delicatessen cases display homemade hot pies, imported cheeses, fresh cuts of lamb, and over twenty varieties of its signature baklava. The center space is densely packed with pantry items like olive oils, jarred vegetables, spices, and much more. They do say never to shop on the empty stomach! So, we suggest hitting up the market after a nice meal at the taverna.

Joan’s on Third is about as close as L.A. gets to New York’s famed Dean & Deluca – but on a more minute scale. What began as a small catering company has since expanded to include a marketplace and café. The gourmet food shop feels feminine, which may come as no surprise considering it’s run by a mother and her two daughters. Cows are a recurring theme throughout the space and on the walls. Who wouldn’t want to pay homage to the cute four-legged animals responsible for my camembert?

The shop has earned a reputation for its delicious breakfasts, tasty sandwiches, and savory desserts – but Joan’s is also a nifty place to stock up on ingredients for your own creations. In their marketplace, the deli showcases cheeses, charcuterie, patés, olives, and spreads almost too beautiful to eat. The refrigerated cases offer gourmet pre-prepared entrees and side dishes – take these home or pack them up for a perfect picnic. Even grab a bottle of wine from the shelf against the wall or some fig spread and breadsticks off the front table.

Of course, you may not be able to help stopping by the dessert station, featuring home-made gelato, cupcakes, cookies, and tarts.

The brainchild of L.A. native and acclaimed chef Nancy Silverton, the café and bakery – an annex of Campanile – offers an impressive selection of sweets, cheeses, olives, pantry staples, pre-prepared foods, and, of course, bread. Bakers crank out over two dozen varieties of the golden stuff every day. Traditional offerings include Sourdough Baguettes, Harvest Grain Loaves, and Olive Ovals. Its selection of cake toppers – made of plastic, candy, and wax – is extensive.

It’s easy to drop major cash at The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills. This purveyor has been providing some of the finest international cheeses to chefs, caterers, and regular folks alike for over 40 years. It imports cheeses from all over France, Italy, and over one dozen other countries. In addition to selling some of the rarest artisanal cheeses in the world, The Cheese Store offers one of the largest selections of goats’ and sheeps’ milk cheese in the United States. Be warned that the sight of so many beautiful cheese wheels and the nutty aroma they give off can be hypnotic, if not overwhelming, especially for first time cheese buyers. Luckily, the friendly staff is more than willing to help you pick the perfect assortment of cheeses for your party or family dinner. The Cheese Store also boasts a large selection of imported pantry items, including salts, confits, and honeys. It even offers a few store-made products, including briny Stuffed Peppers. And, of course, it sells freshly baked crusty bread to spread your purchases on.
